Reds' prospect Mason Felt in serious condition after fatal Texas car accident

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Reds pitching prospect Mason Felt is listed in critical condition after he was involved in a single-vehicle accident that killed his father.

According to reports, the 2012 fifth-round draft pick was wearing his seatbelt.

Felt’s passenger, his father, died at the scene of the accident. Richard Felt, 51, was not wearing his seatbelt, police said.

According to the San Angelo Standard-Times , Mason Felt, 18, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 just outside Ozona, Texas around 10 a.m. Sunday when his 2004 Ford pickup truck drifted onto the shoulder and off the road.

According to police, Mason Felt attempted to overcorrect, went through both lanes of traffic into the center median and overturned the truck.

Mason Felt, a left-handed pitcher from Hoschton, Ga., was selected with the 172nd overall pick in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft by the Reds and signed for $317,800. He was assigned to pitch for the AZL Reds in the Arizona Rookie League, according to MILB.com .

Yahoo reports Mason Felt decided to pass on a scholarship to Oregon State to follow his dream of playing professional baseball like his father, who spent five seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization during the early 80s.
