Cincinnati Bengals' Adam Jones named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam Jones was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week by the NFL Wednesday for his performance in Week 2 of the 2012-2013 season.

Jones returned three punts for 90 yards (30.0-yard average), including an 81-yard return for a touchdown on the game's opening punt in the Bengals’ 34-27 home win over Cleveland on Sunday. The touchdown and subsequent extra point proved to be the difference as the Bengals (1-1) picked up their first win of the season.

The punt return for a touchdown was the first in Jones' three-year career with the Bengals. Jones, who now has five punt returns for touchdowns during his career, had a season-long 63-yard return for the Bengals last season.

Through Week 2, Jones ranks second in the NFL in punt return average (30.0), trailing only Buffalo’s Leodis McKelvin (31.3).

The last Bengal to win an AFC Player of the Week award was wide receiver Brandon Tate, who won the special teams award in Week 8 of the 2011-2012 season. Tate finished that road game against Seattle with 186 total kick return yards, including a 56-yard punt return for a score and a 45-yard kickoff return.
