It was a momentous night for the young Cooper Jaguars football program as they shutout the Boone County Rebels 10-0 to remain unbeaten in our US Marines Backyard Battle and 9 On Your Sidelines event.
This marks the first time that the Cooper (3-0) opened a season with three wins and the first time in five meetings that they’ve come out on top of the Rebels and Ryle as well.
AJ Collins broke off two runs of 30 plus yards on the opening drive of the game. He found the end zone on the second scamper. It would be the only touchdown in the affair as the next 45 minutes became a defensive battle. Collins finished the night with 97 yards rushing and his sixth sore of 2012.
Despite all the firsts, it was an evening that solidified what his team is really all about and that is defense. Cooper now owns Northern Kentucky’s number one scoring defense. The Jaguars have given up just 13 points on the season, an average of 4.3 per contest.
Boone County (1-2) was held to 12 first downs, none of which came easy. The Rebels’ defense came to play too as they held the Jaguars without a first down in a scoreless second half. The best drive of the game for Boone County was ended with an athletic interception Aaron Morgan. It was the junior’s third of the year.
Class 5A Cooper looks for a third win of the season over a larger Class 6A school as they travel to Campbell County on Friday. The Camels are red hot having posted 76 points in the past two weeks with wins over Milford and NewCath. Boone County has a Saturday tilt with an angry CovCath squad.
