CINCINNATI - Covington Catholic beat the odds Friday night after losing three of the last four years on the road against Johnson Central. With their last win against them in 2006, the Colonels finally upset the Golden Eagles on their home turf 45-15. An impressive feat since Johnson Central has only lost three home games total dating back to the 2010 season.
Senior quarterback Blake Bir controlled the majority of Covington Catholic’s (9-3) offense, scoring two touchdowns on the ground and throwing for two more. Bir completed 15 of 23 passes for 287 yards and also rushed for 76 yards. Wide receiver Ethan Egbers was also busy, catching five of Bir’s passes for 101 yards, which included a 52-yard bomb into the end zone.
Johnson Central (9-3) had a terrible passing game, completing zero out of five attempts. The only yards gained were on the ground for 180 compared to the Colonel’s total of 519 yards.
Covington Catholic will advance next week to play local rival Highlands for the Class 4A regional crown.
