National Signing Day has arrived. It is a big day both for local high school players and the college coaches that are working hard to lure them to their schools.
This year Northern Kentucky churned out a handful of players that are sure to make an impact at the next level.
Our TSF NKY Offensive Player of the Year, CovCath quarterback Blake Bir (6-2, 190), made his decision known earlier in the week when he verbally committed to Dayton. Bir rewrote the CovCath single-season and career passing records during his three-year stint as the Colonels starter.
Two other TSF NKY Offensive Players of the Year finalists, Campbell County’s Tyler Durham (6-4/215) and Beechwood’s Max Nussbaum (6-1/195), will sign on Wednesday. Both were among the area’s finest athletes and spent time at multiple positions, giving them versatility as they head to next level. Nussbaum is headed to Eastern Kentucky. Durham chose Georgetown College, where he’ll get to work with former NewCath coach Eddie Eviston.
The offensive and defensive lines were not left out of the Signing Day excitement. Walton-Verona’s Cole Mosier (6-5/325) opted to go with Kentucky as a preferred walk-on. He played both sides of the ball well for the Bearcats during the team’s best season in school history earning his All-TSF honors. Mosier was a finalist for the 2012 TSF NKY Defensive Player of the Year, but is expected to work on the offensive line in Lexington.
Simon Kenton’s Ben Racke (6-2/260), a Second-Team All-TSF offensive lineman, committed to Butler. Elliott Rust (6-0/220) is leaving NewCath to join his former coach at Georgetown College. Conner’s Jared Kunkel (6-2/255) is headed to Lindsey Wilson and his teammate Darien Wolnitzek (6-3/265).
CovCath linebacker DJ Powell (5-11/215) opted to stay home and play at Thomas More.
There are plenty more players that have made decisions or weighing their options. Stay tuned to 9 On Your Side for all the latest news and follow our high school football partner Tri-State Football on Twitter @TSFootball for year-round updates.
