SYMMES TWP., Ohio -- An investigation is underway after an explosion at Rozzi's Fireworks in Symmes Township sent two people to the hospital Friday afternoon.

Officials say employees were digging underground when some kind of explosion happened at the business at 11605 Lebanon Road around 4 p.m.

Two workers suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital in stable condition. Their names have not been released.

A total of six nearby homes were evacuated.

Daniel Mills lives down the street from the Rozzi facility and says the explosion caught him off guard.

"Just talking on the phone with my sister and all of a sudden there was a ‘boom!’ Windows shook, the floor actually vibrated for about a half a second at most and then it was gone," Mills said.

Fire officials brought in the bomb squad to make sure the area was safe.

After the bomb squad surveyed the area, residents were allowed back in their homes.

"We don't know exactly what it was that exploded, we don't know how much is there, we don't know how much is underground," said Chief Stan Deimling,  of the Union Township Fire Department.

Crews will continue the investigation Saturday at 8 a.m.
