Why Is It Called Black Friday?

Last Update: 11/27/2009 8:50 am
Friday is called 'Black Friday.'

It is named this because it's the day retailers hope will propel them from the red into the black, or turning a profit.

As in past years, the lines began forming yesterday evening before stores were open.

Some stores opened at 12 a.m., others at 4 a.m., 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Many retailers are hoping to see big profits from Black Friday, despite consumers spending less.
