Campbell Co. Schools Face $2M In Cuts

The tough economy is forcing one Northern Kentucky school district to make some tough choices when it comes to budget cuts.

With the Commonwealth facing a $1 billion dollar shortfall, local school districts don't have much of a choice.

In Campbell County, they have to make up a $2 million dollar deficit out of their $42 million budget without having a major effect on the 4,800 students in the classroom.

After a recent school board meeting, the superintendent says they decided to make cuts across the board.

"Roughly we had over 20 reductions in the schools or district staff," said Anthony Strong, Campbell County Superintendent. "A very broad cross section of making cuts because we felt like that was important to look at all of our departments in terms of cost savings."

Strong adds perhaps the biggest loss is the elimination of media specialists and librarians in all of the schools.

They will restructure to only one person.

"When you are cutting teachers and cutting our media specialists its taking from our kid's education. I don't agree with only having one librarian for five elementary schools. I think that's going to hurt," said Debbie Roaden, a parent.

One area that isn't seeing any staff reductions is transportation. But the district is taking a closer look at the current routes to make them more efficient.

The district's goal is to make the most of a difficult situation.

"The work is not going to stop. It's going to be passed to someone else, and that's tough sometimes," said Strong.

These are proposed budget cuts until the board has a final vote in September.
