NORWOOD, Ohio -- Hundreds of people waited in line in the brisk morning cold to be among the first shoppers in the new Nordstrom Rack Store that opened at the Rookwood Pavilion on Friday morning.
The new outlet type store for the Nordstrom department store chain specializes in shoes, designer handbags and clothing at a 30 to 70 percent discount over prices at the main department store.
One lucky first-day customer was picked to get a 90-second shopping spree inside the store at 8:45 a.m., just about 20 minutes before it opened to the public.
When the countdown was finished around 9:05 a.m. Friday, hundreds of people started to stream through the double front doors, as they screamed, shouted and clapped their appreciation for making into the discount store.
The first 1000 customers to the Nordstrom Rack's opening day were due to get free shopping bags from the retailer.
We watched as the mostly female crowd ran for the purse, pocket book and shoe sections squeezing by others that were deciding what they wanted to buy.
The new Nordstrom Rack store will employ 70 people and it opens just a few weeks after Nordstorm made its first appearance in the Tri-state by opening a full department store in the old Parisiene and J.C. Penney location at the Kenwood Towne Center.
The only other Nordstrom Rack location is in a suburb of Cleveland. Nordstrom currently has 112 full department stores nationwide, with 69 Nordstrom Rack locations.
