The Boone County Fiscal Court voted to change the zoning of an area of land in Hebron from residential to commercial.

The decision comes despite objections from residents living in nearby Cardinal Cove subdivision.

"First of all it's too large of a shopping center to go in that small space and the primary reason is the added traffic that would occur on 237 would really cause a lot more danger to us and inconvenience," said Frank Dichiara of Hebron.

County leaders have discussed this zoning change proposal for months.

"It was approved by the committee but rejected by the full commission. Once it comes to the Fiscal Court we have 90 days to act and this is the 90th day," said Judge Executive Gary Moore of Boone County.

Since the initial discussions, the developer has changed the plans including moving the building closer to the commercial development of nearby Remke's and using more landscape to create a buffer between the homes and retail center.

"The commercial development has been designed as low profile lighting and a heavy buffer of landscaping. An apartment building would be potentially be two to three stories creating thus a more negative impact upon the community than a commercial development. So those are things we will weigh in our discussion tonight," Moore.

Residents however also fear more commercial development will lead to decreased property values.

"We feel like this corner up here from I-275 on down is overdeveloped. We don't feel like there is a need for this much development," said Dichiara.
