Hispanic Community On Notice After Armed Robberies

Owners of Hispanic markets in Florence are warning customers after a series of armed robberies within the last week.

"We just tell people to be aware of their surroundings, don't trust anyone – and don't leave your car unlocked. Just keep an eye out," said Ulices Contreres, co-owner of La Guadalapana Market.

It’s advice that is spreading throughout the Hispanic community in Florence after three armed robberies took place outside of Hispanic markets last week.

Surveillance tape captures the armed robbery suspect police describe as a Hispanic man in his 20s with two gold front teeth, wearing a green and white striped soccer jersey outside of El Oasis Market on KY 18 in Florence.

"You can see him on the video. He's out in the parking lot and basically looking for a victim, walking around acting like he's blending in. He's by himself, just waiting," said Detective Randy Maines, of the Florence Police.

In the parking lot, police say the suspect robbed a man of his cash and jewelry.

A short time before that crime, police say the same suspect robbed a man parked outside La Guadalapana Market on Turfway Road.

"A guy walked up to him and put a gun to his side. The guy was on his side, and he had the kids in the back and the guy demanded money. He gave the guy money and the guy turned around and walked away," said Ulices Contreres, of La Guadalapana Market.

A third robbery took place later that night outside the Real Enchilada on Dream Street.

An attorney representing that victim says her client was arrested the very next morning for immigration issues.

She's worried about the message its sending to others.

"When somebody does the right thing, the very next day they are subject to incarceration and deportation, so the robber wins that one," said Alexandria Lubans-Otto, an immigration attorney. “I don't think it’s a benefit to anyone else than that person.”

Through word of mouth, another market owner says she's heard about two other robberies that have taken place.

"These are just the incidents that I know about,” said Blanca Aguiler, owner of El Oasis.

“I personally know about five, but there could be more and people are not coming forward because they are afraid,” said Aguiler.

Florence police are only aware of the three incidents because that's all that have been reported so far.

If you have any information about this crime, please call Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040 or text (513) 352-3050. You don't have to give your name and you may be eligible for a reward if your tips lead to an arrest.
