FRANKFORT, Ky. – Preliminary statistics indicate that 12 people died in 11 separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Nov. 9-15.
Eight of the crashes involved motor vehicles and eight of the nine victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Floyd, Hart, Jefferson, Knox, Logan and Powell counties. The crash in Logan county involved the suspected use of alcohol.
A double-fatality motor vehicle crash occurred in Rowan county on I-64 Westbound at the 145 mile marker causing the interstate to shut down for several hours.
Two crashes involved motorcycles in Cumberland and Lincoln county. The crash in Lincoln county involved the suspected use of alcohol and the victim was not wearing a helmet. A hit-and-run crash involving a scooter occurred in Henderson county.
Through Nov. 15, preliminary statistics indicate that 674 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2009. This is 36 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2008.
There were 543 motor vehicle fatalities and 298 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-two pedestrians and five bicyclists have been killed. Seventy-eight fatalities involved a motorcycle and fifteen fatalities involved an ATV. Sixty-five crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of 143 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
