A local sex offender is facing federal charges.

This comes after the passing of a new federal law cracking down on offenders who fail to register.

It’s called the "Adam Walsh Act" and went into effect two years ago, but this is one of the first times someone in the Cincinnati area is being tried for it for failing to register as a sex offender, after crossing state lines.

The case involves Lawrence Sipple.

In 1998, he was convicted of corrupting a minor and was labeled a convicted sex offender by Hamilton County.

Deputies with the U.S. Marshals say he moved from Ohio to Kentucky and back again to Ohio without telling authorities.

Back in March a mother and her four kids were at the Taco Bell drive-thru in Cold Spring, Ky.

Police say Sipple was waiting on her and his behavior raised her suspicions.

"It was the way he said that alarmed her. She left Taco Bell and checked Kentucky State Police Web site and saw a picture of Mr. Sipple and recognized the photo of the guy in the window and she made contact with Kentucky State Police cause he was out of compliance with Campbell County. He had not registered," said Deputy Brian Hilsinger with the U.S. Marshal's Office, Southern District of Ohio.

John Walsh, host of “America’s Most Wanted,” was the driving force behind the law named after his son Adam who was murdered.

It’s designed to punish sex offenders who cross state lines and fail to register their address.

Sipple appeared at the federal courthouse in downtown Cincinnati on Thursday afternoon. He's currently being held at the Boone County jail.

Because of this new federal law, he's now looking at more time behind bars.
