HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- Officials in Northern Kentucky met on Monday to prepare for an unprecedented event this Wednesday.
For the first time, health workers are handing out 8,000 doses of the swine flu vaccine during a clinic at The Bank of Kentucky Center.
"It's unprecedented. We haven't done anything this large. Quite honestly if we look at it nationally we have not had these events come along in quite a long time where we've had to vaccinate large amounts of people," said Steve Divine, of the Northern Kentucky Independent District Health Department.
The clinic will take place this Wednesday at The Bank of Kentucky Center from at 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
It is important to note patients will not be able to park on NKU's campus. Shuttle buses provided by tank will be offered instead. Participants can park at three off-site locations.
The closest parking lot is Furniture Fair located on U.S. 27. Further down the road drivers can park at the First Baptist Church of Cold Spring or the Meijer also on U.S. 27.
Extra police officers and volunteers will be at each of the parking lots directing people on how to catch one of the shuttle buses.
The target group for this first clinic is pregnant women, health care workers and college students under 24.
Health officials say The Bank Of Kentucky clinic may not be the best venue to bring younger kids.
Two more clinics held later this month will be more family friendly. Children on Wednesday, however, will not be turned away.
"It's going to take some patience on the part of the people we are serving, and we know that we have a lot of dedicated staff who are going to be working hard for what's going to turn out to be a long day," said Divine.
The vaccine will be available in both the shot and nasal spray.
Patients are encouraged to wear a short sleeve T-shirt for faster access.
