NEWPORT, Ky -- After nearly a decade of developmental issues, a new Kroger will open next week.

The Newport Pavilion will boast one of the largest of the largest Kroger stores in the area of over 116,000 square feet. A Kroger store generally is about 78,000 square feet.

It could be a boost for the local economy because Kroger employs 500 at the new store already and is still hiring.

According to the Newport City Manager Thomas Fromme, more than 125,000 vehicles pass the location daily. In turn, that should generate nearly $350,000 in tax revenue from the grocer alone, and about $600,000 when all stores and restaurants are in operation. Target is slated to break ground by the end of Spring.

Resident Douglas Iles summed up the new shopping center this way, "You keep the money in Newport and you don't travel no further than two or three blocks out of your way."
