The widening of U.S. 27 in Campbell County is about to enter a new phase – construction of a 2.4-mile section from Racetrack Road (KY 824) to just south of Nagle Road.
The $26.5 million project is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 – commonly known as the federal stimulus. Eaton Asphalt Paving Co., of Covington, won the low-bid contract.
Rob Hans, Chief District Engineer for Department of Highways District 6, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, said the project, when completed, will alleviate increased traffic congestion on U.S. 27. "It will provide many commuters from Pendleton County and southern Campbell County a safer road with greater accessibility," Hans said.
The widened roadway will be a four-lane, divided highway with turning lanes in some places. The project will improve the intersection of U.S. 27 and KY 1936 (Clay Ridge Road) with a new bridge over Phillips Creek. In addition, the intersection of U.S. 27 and KY 154 (Peach Grove Road) at Grants Lick will be reconfigured and improved.
Construction of the first phase of the U.S. 27 widening project began in November 2004 and was completed in November 2007. It covered 3.9 miles from KY 536 to Racetrack Road (KY 824) and cost $25.6 million.
For the second phase, signage will be placed and the contractor plans to begin work in early September. Most of the construction work will be on the westbound side of U.S. 27.
Two lanes of traffic will be maintained throughout the construction project. However, motorists should be aware of signage, speed limits and lane closures. The expected completion date is November 2012.
