Unemployment rates rose in all 120 Kentucky counties between May 2008 and May 2009, a new report finds.
Statewide the unemployment rate climbed to 10.5 percent in May – up 4.3 percentage points over the 6.2 percent rate for May 2008.
Magoffin County had the state’s highest unemployment rate in May at 18 percent, according to a report issued by the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training.
Fayette County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the commonwealth at 7.7 percent for May.
The May unemployment rate in the Northern Kentucky region stood at 10.1 percent with Pendleton County recording the highest rate in the region at 13.1 percent. Boone County’s unemployment rate came in at 9.2 percent, Campbell County’s stood at 9.7 percent and Kenton County’s rate was 10.0 percent in May.
The state’s unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks.
